How to Run a Golf Team Qualifier

How school golf coaches run qualifying: how many rounds, which courses, spots by score and coach picks, and telling each player where they stand.

Every coach gets asked why someone isn’t playing. A qualifier answers most of it before anyone asks, as long as the rules were clear before the first tee shot.

Write the rules down first

Before round one, decide and share:

Send it to players and parents. Changing the rules halfway is how a qualifier turns into an argument.

How many rounds

One round is mostly luck. Three to five gives a fairer picture. Some programs play more before the first event and qualify again in the middle of the season.

Which courses

Play at least one round where most of your matches are played. A harder setup separates players better than an easy one.

Spots by score, plus your picks

A common shape: the lowest totals take most of the spots, and the coach keeps one. Say up front what a pick is for (recent form, experience on that course) so it doesn’t look like a favour.

Count every round

Total strokes across every round is the easiest rule to explain. Dropping the worst round helps a player who was ill, but it adds a question every time.

Tell players where they stand

Post the standings after every round. When the lineup goes out, tell each player why they are where they are, in private. The player moved by a pick is the one who most needs to hear it from you.

Know how your matches are scored

Many school matches play five and count the lowest four totals, but formats vary by state and league. Check yours before you decide how many spots the qualifier fills.

How Swilkin handles it

On a coach’s team, New qualifier makes an event on the team where every round counts, with its board one tap from the team page. For a match, you place who plays, in order, and the alternates. Each spot keeps its reason: the player’s place on the qualifier, or that you moved them up. Sending the lineup posts it to the team, and a reason reaches only that player and their parents.

After the match, type the other school’s total. Every match plays five and counts the lowest four.
